Part 3: Unemployment this Christmas Season – How Americans are Coping
As we conclude our three-part series looking at how the economy is affecting Americans this holiday season, we salute those who are getting out there and working in seasonal positions. These positions offer a great chance for people to get out of the doldrums of staying at home and feeling the full impact of being unemployed. Many of them haven’t been given the chance to go through the employment screening or criminal background check process.
Seasonal jobs also offer people a chance to help their finances, pay off bills that are behind, and even have a better Christmas. For the individuals we’ve looked at in this series, the common thread between them all is a sense of thankfulness this season. Grateful to have any income coming in, these folks are a real inspiration to us all. Thank you to CNN Money for their special report this week on these inspiring individuals.
Coming Back to Work After Retiring
For one retired postal worker in Georgia, going back to work wasn’t brought about by financial trouble. Her decision to start working again was based on a proactive move to save as much as she could in her savings account. Since she and her husband have a goal of “paying a tax bill from the year before.” They decided that since her retirement pension wasn’t going to supply the added money, she would go back to work to help out.
Though she is making about half of what she made as a postal carrier, she is very happy with her new job. She enjoys home decorating, so her new job at the mall in the home good department feels like a perfect fit right now. Not only does she have a steady income again, but she will be “doing something different” which is what she wanted.
Coming Out of Retirement – Again
For a 63 year old New England native, going back to work was a necessity, given the hard times he and his wife have come upon. When his wife of 41 years found herself unemployed, they thought she would be able to find work again rather quickly, as she had been able to before. However, in the current economic climate, finding a job wasn’t as simple as submitting a resume, going through employment screening, and passing a criminal background check.
No, work was hard to come by for the first time in her life. Not only did she put out many more resumes in the past year than ever before, but she wasn’t getting called back. Both she and her husband decided to take action. Seasonal jobs for both of them have helped tremendously and they will be able to give Christmas gifts this year.
