Criminal Background Check

Top 10 Weirdest Complaints that Human Resources Departments Have Received from Their Employees

It’s no wonder we love to go to work so much: we get paid to be there and we work with such interesting people! Though some people might not completely agree with that statement, the truth is Human Resources Departments take the brunt of complaint from workers who do not find their fellow co-workers so much “interesting” as they do disturbing. Here are the top 10 weirdest complaints that HR Managers have received from employees as reported to CareerBuilder in a nationwide survey this year of over 2,600 Hiring Managers:

  • Employee always eats the good cookies from the break room
  • Employee makes people around them angry because they are too polite
  • An employee is attempting to poison them
  • The company doesn’t provide a place for naps
  • Employee only wears house slippers or socks to work
  • Employee’s breathing is too noisy
  • Employee requests that a co-worker be checked for ticks
  • Can work start later? 8 a.m. is too early to get up for work!
  • Employee wears bells on her shoes and it’s not the right time of year
  • A male employee keeps using the ladies’ restroom because the men’s bathroom is messy

Each of these items may sound ridiculous to the average person, but for these complainants, they felt moved enough to make a formal complaint. However, some of these shocking claims are definitely worth looking into further. Take, for example, the suspicion that an employee was trying to poison them. For companies like Accu-Screen, a criminal background check is one of the many employment background screening services they provide. An employee that has been fired or jailed for an offense like this is someone you do not want to hire!

One recent example is the case of Dr. Michael Swango, a medical doctor who was convicted of killing numerous patients. Due to the fact that the hospital’s staff did the criminal background check rather than hiring a professional company like Accu-Screen, they missed the fact that Dr. Swango had just been released from prison in another state for a 5 year felony conviction for poisoning his co-workers! Yes, this stuff really happens…and when it does, you want to be properly informed so you can avoid hiring that person.

Though the other complaints are pretty humorous to imagine, the last one, the gentleman using the ladies’ room, could potentially be a big problem. What the female employees don’t know is if the male employee has ill intentions while he is using their restroom. This can not only be dangerous for the employees, but can be a huge liability for the company, should anything happen. Many companies decide to forego the criminal background check and employment background screening because they don’t want to spend a little money to have the person’s history checked.

However, when you look at the Dr. Swango case, as well as the man using the women’s restroom, it is apparent that a criminal background check should be one of the first things you do before you hire someone!
