Employee Screening – Why is it important to conduct drug testing in the workplace?

We cannot deny the fact that drug testing in the workplace has become more and more popular over the recent years. It is quite troubling to think that the reason for the increase in this rate is the increase in number of drug users in the streets. We all know the bad effect of drug use on people and how this can alter perception and behavior, making people do things that they can never imagine doing.

With the growing number of cases involving crime and violence in the workplace rooted from drug use, employers deem that is very important to conduct drug testing as part of the standardized employee screening procedure.

It is very important to conduct drug testing for applicants to ensure that the employer, as mandated by law, would be able to provide a safe and healthy working environment for his employees. That would be hard to do if you mistakenly hire a drug user who can resort to killing sprees if provoked.

Drug testing is also crucial not only for the safety of the company and the co-employees but also for the safety of the clients and customers. Whatever business you have, you should be able to hire employees who will not only be efficient in dealing with customer concerns but will also not do anything that can possibly inflict harm on them.

As mentioned earlier, drug use can alter perception and behavior, and the most efficient member of your staff, whom you did not know were into drugs, can suddenly turn into a vicious creature who may do harm to your customers. This will surely do great damage to the name and reputation of your company.

Another important reason for conducting drug testing is to ensure the quality of an employee. Drug use can result in turnovers, lack of productivity, tardiness, absenteeism and poor performance, making the employee a liability rather than an asset.

Drug testing is a very important part of the hiring procedure. But do your part as an employer and carry out this procedure fairly and responsibly.
