Criminal background check – I am putting my father in a retirement home, should I do background checks on the employees in there?

You do not have to conduct a background check on every single person in the retirement home. It is not only very costly but it is also unnecessary. The only people you have to do background checks on are the ones who will be taking care of your father—the caregivers that are assigned to him.

Conducting a background check especially criminal background check is important to ensure that the people taking care of your dad have no criminal records of whatever kind. You surely do not want someone who has been involved in grave felonies like theft or murder to be the one tending to your father, right?

Aside from that, conducting a background check makes certain that your father’s caregiver know what he or she is doing. A caregiver should have intensive training and background on this area and should know the rudiments on how to handle caring for an elderly person. Because resume falsification (otherwise known as resume lie) is rampant these days, you have to be doubly sure that the caregiver of your father has the right credentials to be able to be a fitting care provider.

Of course, you do not have to rely solely on background checks, as there are many other things you have to keep in mind before you put your father in a retirement home. For one, you need to look for a nice and decent retirement home for your father.

It is never enough to just look at the photos, you need to visit the site yourself to see how it really looks like. Inspect the place critically to see if it is clean and sanitary. Look around and see how the elderly people are being treated here. If you deem that they do not treat the elders with respect and care, skip this one and move on to the next. You would also need to talk to the management of the retirements and see what kinds of people are running the home.

Your father did everything to provide you with all your needs, it is only right that you do the same thing for him now that he is in the age of vulnerability.
