Employment Background Checks - What are the advantages and disadvantages of conducting background check on employees?
Just like about anything in this world, there are also two sides in employment background checks—the pros and the cons.
At the side of the advantages, the number one benefit derived from this type of background check is being able to hire the right employees for your company. With the rising incidences of resume falsifications and negligent hiring lawsuits, employers have grown alarmed that they may be hiring the wrong people for their companies.
Resume falsification can lead to hiring people unfit for the job position whereas negligent hiring can result in more serious consequences such as terribly expensive costs as well as damage to the company’s name and reputation.
Because of this, more and more business and company owners begin to include background checks as a standard procedure for hiring employees.
While the benefits sound priceless, you also have to know that there are also a few drawbacks that can result from background checks. The most prominent one is refusing a potentially excellent employee due to inaccurate information about his or her past. It is a known fact that there can be some inaccuracies when it comes to investigating information about a certain person.
To minimize the risks of encountering the drawbacks, it is a must that you rely only reputable employment screening companies who have efficient means of deriving accurate information about people so you do not make the mistake of driving away an employee that could have done so well in your company.
Furthermore, you can also do your own investigation and verify the information gathered by the background check and drug testing. One way to do that is contact the former employers of the applicant and ask about his or her performance as an employee. Do not simply ask if the employee has been a good worker but be more specific and ask about his attitude towards work, his routine and schedule, his relationships with co-workers, his ability to meet deadlines and so on.
