You can learn so much more about a job applicant from a pre-employment screening other than their educational and criminal history.
A thorough background check can also verify employment history provided on a resume or application. Many applicants exaggerate the tasks they performed in past jobs in order to make themselves seem more valuable than they actually are. Also sometimes those looking for a job even cover gaps in employment history by changing the dates of employment of their past work experience. As a employer both of these issues should raise a red flag on that particular applicant. Those that exaggerate may be just ambitious and hope to get more responsibility within your company, but others are just not be qualified for the position you may need to fill.
